This course is designed to introduce students to some of the key events, issues, debates, and questions in the history of "Western Civilization" since the seventeenth century. It assumes that Western ideas and institutions have, for better or worse, come to dominate the world since the eighteenth century, and that these ideas and institutions have become "norms" by which the rest of the world is studied, understood, and, unfortunately, judged. The course presumes, therefore, that since students are living in a world dominated – at least for the present – by Western ideas and institutions, they should understand something about them
