Western Art is part of a series of courses designed to survey the historical development of painting, sculpture, architecture, and related art forms created by Western and non-Western cultures and civilizations from pre-history through the 14th century. Course discussions include the visual arts of prehistoric times, Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, ancient Rome, early Christian-Byzantine, Medieval Europe, and the early Renaissance. Emphasis is placed on integrating the development of art forms with the geographic, social, political, philosophical, and religious characteristics of these cultures.
