In this course we will examine the state of the research concerning the development of the child during middle childhood, which is approximately from 7 or 8 to 12 years of age. The course will emphasize theory, child observation, developmental research and policy that is pertinent to the child and family in context. This is not a course on how to “work with children,” nor is it a course that provides a uni-dimensional portrait of the school-aged child. Instead we will use the readings and observations to inform us of the contexts, abilities and challenges that are pertinent to this age period. This course is required for child development majors.
