This course will help you develop an understanding of your career development. It is an upper division course offered for I unit of academic credit, taken on a CREDIT/ No CREDIT basis. You will learn about your own skills, interests, values, and personality style. With this knowledge as a foundation, you will be able to build short and long-term career/life plans. We will explore the changing nature of today's workplace, how to best prepare for it, and how to transition from the role of student to that of an emerging professional.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

• Gain a better understanding of self through identification of values, interests, skills, personality characteristics, goals, and lifestyle preferences.
• Understand the relationship between academic major and career choices.
• Examine the process of career development in conjunction with career competencies as well as the impact of contemporary issues (i.e. dual-career families, gender, and the new economy) on that process.
• Research graduate/professional school aspirations, occupational and job market information for application to career and educational goals.
• Explore internship or other experiential learning opportunities to enhance career development.
• Gain a better understanding of the job search strategies (i.e. networking, direct contact with employers, diversifying the search process) as well as how to effectively write a resume, conduct job search correspondence and build interviewing skills.

The goal of this course will be to help you learn how to make informed academic and/or career decisions. The primary emphasis will be on gaining the self-knowledge necessary to learn to apply one’s skills, talents and interests, to education, career and life planning.

*This course is highly relevant to your future but the benefit you will gain is directly related to the amount of effort you put into it. Obviously hard work will not be rewarded with a high grade, since it is a credit/no credit course. The reward is much more valuable. You will know yourself better, understand your career options more clearly, and will be able to make informed choices about your future with more confidence and less fear.
