This course has two key goals. The first is to expose you to the challenges and opportunities related to starting and managing your own business. You will be exposed to the realities of transforming an idea into an operational reality. This course has three focus areas: 1) Understanding and applying the ideation process to generate, develop, and communicate new ideas from innovation, to development, to actualization. 2) Understanding and applying the forces of change and innovation to your business idea with a focus on how to effectively manage your own efforts 3) Developing an executive business plan summary that can be shared with potential partners and investors.

The second goal is to help plan and promote a national conference on the New Economic Agenda that is scheduled for this fall in San Diego. This national conference is the brainshild of Sol Trujillo (a multinational business executive and recipient of an honory doctoratre from our College) and other national business leaders who are looking for student engagement to help plan and execute a national conference that will focus on the economic might of the current and growing Latino economic market. This is a “praxis” based course as we will take a pragmatic approach via individual and class assignments. Accordingly, course content includes readings, case analyses, written assignments, exercises, guest lectures, and active planning and discussion with external business leaders. By the conclusion of this class you should be (A) better prepared to vet ideas, develop a value proposition, add turn that idea into a potential ad viable business and (B) engaged in planning a national conference to change the narrative on Latinos to focus on economic might rather than border walls and hurdles to economic empowerment. This five week course will use both synchronous and asynchronous communication channels.
