Welcome to Moving Image I: Web & Social Media!

The internet has simultaneously become a space for both intimate community building and isolation; accessibility of information and control of information; simulations of the real, documents of the real, and fictional constructions that evolve from digital reality to lived reality. This course will focus on the tools and production strategies necessary for creating moving image art within these theoretical contexts of social media and the web.

Technical instruction will focus on animation and digital image editing softwares, tapping into the creative potential and prevalence of animation as a medium for virtual works. Through in-class exercises and assigned projects, students will gain proficiency in programs such as Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and After Effects. We will address the timing, movement, and aesthetic considerations of digital information while realizing the potential to subvert the visual languages of internet-based media.

The themes we will address include:
- Construction & Simulation: The reality of internet-based media
- Media Archaeology: The internet as archive
- Social Media & Motion Graphics: The aesthetics of information
- Accessibility & Open Source Philosophies: Moving image as a tool for social change

Screenings and readings from artists working with these themes will provide students with a conceptual framework to inform their class projects. In addition to contemporary artists, this course will draw on the history of experimental animation and video art for theoretical and aesthetic reference.
