Course Description
In this course, you will learn the art and craft of short and long subject (short film, feature
film, multimedia, gaming, etc.) screenwriting. Time will be spent on screenwriting basics,
including: theme, plot, story structure, characterization, format, dialogue, adaptation,
crossing platforms and scene description via lecture, discussion, close analysis, and
instructor-peer critique. Not only will you work creatively on idea generation and visual
storytelling, but on how to meaningfully connect with your audience. Course topics
include: (1) characterization and character relationships; (2) dialogue, subtext, and
exposition; (3) conflict, establishing stakes, and obstacles; (4) plot development, how to
create twists, suspense, and surprises; (5) developing structure, format, and writing across
genres, to name a few.
