Socioemotional skills positively predict children’s future academic
success, social skills, and overall well-being. Given this
association, educators and developmental researchers have pushed
for greater examination of the development of these skills.
Children’s sociocultural context and environment impact
socioemotional development through parental socialization practices
and cultural beliefs and norms. In this course, we will discuss how
children develop socioemotional skills within their sociocultural
context. Drawing on theories of development such as sociocultural
theory, ecological systems theory, and human development as a
cultural process, students will present a social and emotional
learning activity in class and with instructor support, develop an
evidence-based policy brief on an issue related to children’s
socioemotional development.
