In this class, students will discover and explore the rich legacy of Islam in Moroccan architecture, culture, history, music, politics, nationalism, and spirituality. Through a carefully curated program of virtual events of guided excursions to UNESCO world heritage sites, a Moroccan tea ceremony, a cooking demonstration of Moroccan cuisine, language (Arabic) and cultural-exchange lessons, an Andalusian-Sufi concert, and talks with students, families, and NGO experts in the host country, students will “travel to Morocco” weekly and engage in extended conversation and reflection about intercultural difference. Course topics include Moroccan customs and culture, Gnawa music, Sufism, Jewish communities in Morocco, and political Islam. This course has no pre-requisite or fee. It satisfies the CUL 1 requirement.
