SPAN 221, as a continuation of SPAN 220 or its equivalent, is designed to allow you to
continue to improve oral, aural, written and cultural skills and significantly increase your overall ability to communicate expressively and with nuance.  The course blends the underlying principles of the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages with features and strategies tailored specifically to build your language and cultural competencies. The Standards are organized into five goal areas, often called the Five C’s: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. These areas may be summarized as follows:
Communication: Understand and be understood: read and listen to understand the Spanish speaking world, converse with others, and share your thoughts clearly through speaking and writing.
Cultures: Experience and reflect on Spanish-speaking cultures through their own viewpoints, in the places, objects, behaviors, and beliefs important to the people who live them.
Connections: Apply what you learn in your Spanish course to expand your knowledge of other disciplines; access and evaluate information that is available through Spanish-speaking cultures.
Comparisons: Discover and reflect on how the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures are like your own-and how they differ.
Communities: Use the Spanish language and knowledge of Spanish-speaking cultures to engage in local and globalized communities, both in your courses and beyond-for life.
