This course is a comprehensive review of Mexican American, or
Chicano/a
literature. The course will introduce students to important literary works
written by major Chicano/a writers, primarily from the twentieth and twenty
first century. Genre selections include, but are not limited to corrido, short
story, life narratives, poetry, and theater. The course will provide students
with a general historical literary background of Chicano/a literature and
cover important themes of immigration, identity, language, cultural
ambivalence, national culturalism, gender, and sexuality, among others.
While Mexican American/Chicano literature is part of the American literary
tradition, and often written in English, this course will focus on Mexican
American/Chicano literature written in Spanish, with occasional readings in
English
