This class is an introductory survey of the literature of Asia, with a specific focus on India, China and Japan. The course focuses on fiction, poetry, and religious texts. The approach to Asian literature is hybrid: both critical and creative. In addition to learning the major movements and important writers of India, China and Japan from antiquity until today, students will learn to write in Asian literary forms, such as the upanishad, the ghazal, the cut-verse quatrain, the haiku, the tanka, and the zuihitsu.
