This course seeks to reveal and decipher both the challenges faced by Latin American countries, and the various forms of government that have emerged to deal with those challenges. The course explores questions of democracy and authoritarianism; political mobilization and repression; revolution; democratization and its counterpart; democratic decline. We take a historical perspective to explain current politics in countries including Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Chile, Cuba, and Nicaragua.
