The purpose of this course is to develop sight singing and dictation
skills necessary to perform and teach tonal and nontonal music.

Course Objectives To be able to: 1) recognize and sing intervals; 2) sing modal, chromatic, and nontonal melodies at sight; 3) take harmonic dictation with modulations and chromatically altered chords; 4) take motivic dictation: write 3-note motives, supply intervals, prime forms, and TTOs; 5) to ignite a quest for musical knowledge through the development of active learning and critical thinking skills; and 6) to develop an understanding of the evolution and usage of the signs and symbols that constitute the musical vocabulary of a wide array of music.

Course Objectives: To be able to: 1) recognize and sing intervals; 2) sing tonal melodies at sight using solfege; 3) take beginning rhythmic, harmonic and melodic dictation; 4) to ignite a quest for musical knowledge through the development of active learning and critical thinking skills; and 5) to develop an understanding of the evolution and usage of the signs and symbols that constitute the musical vocabulary of a wide array of music.

Music and its development in Western civilization from 1750 to the present; acquaintance with formal and stylistic problems through representative works; understanding musical concepts in their historical and cultural contexts.
