This is a course introducing you to various aspects of China. “Land” refers to the entire region of China. “People” implies all ethnic groups that inhabit this land as well as their cultural activities and social issues. A number of topics covered consist of, but not limited to, geography, historical events, administrative regions, major ethnic minorities, customs, lifestyles, architecture, arts and craftworks, important archeology findings, world heritage sites, and intangible cultural heritage.

An introductory in standard Chinese (Mandarin) designed for students with no previous knowledge of the language. The course introduces the fundamentals of Chinese, including pronunciation, grammar, and Chinese characters, emphasizing the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. By the end of the 120/121 sequence, students will have acquired knowledge of basic grammar rules, the ability to converse, read and write on simple rules topics of student's daily life, and command over 500 Chinese compounds and over 300 characters.
